PADI Drift Diver
The PADI Drift Diver Specialty course introduces you to the coolest method of transportation you will ever experience. Just descend to the bottom and let nature do the rest. Relax and enjoy tides, ocean currents and even rivers by “going with the flow,” staying with your dive buddy, communicating with the dive boat and knowing where you are the whole time.
Drift Diving is nearly effortless and relaxing. You simply glide along and enjoy the rush of flying underwater while the current does the work. It’s as close to flying as you are going to get without an airplane.
If you have booked onto one of our regular weekends to the coast why not combine your trip with this exciting specialty and save some cash.
How do I get started?
As with all of the diving education programmes at Aquasport you start with the training materials. A deposit of £50 is required to book your PADI Drift Diver Specialty. We will provide you with the PADI Drift Diver manual for you to read prior to the start of your training.
What will I do?
During your programme you will practice the following:
- Planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems and hazards of drift diving
- An introduction to drift diving equipment — floats, lines, reels
- Buoyancy control, navigation and communication for drift diving
- Site selection and overview of aquatic currents, causes and effects
- Techniques for staying close to a buddy or together as a group
You will have one and a half days of intense drift diver training to complete. In our fully equipped multi-media classrooms you will learn not only the techniques used to take full advantage of Mother Nature herself, but also how to do it safely and maximising the fun side.
You will put into practice what you learn in a combination of skills in two open water training dives taken on one of our UK coastal trips or Red Sea holidays.
How long will it take?
The PADI Drift Diver Specialty takes place over one weekend. Starting on a midweek evening you will complete the theory sections from the PADI Drift Diver manual. The Saturday will cover all the practical sessions during your two open water training dives down at the coast.
You can arrange with your instructor to continue to gain experience on the Sunday by using the equipment from the programme to do some more diving before handing it back in on the Sunday afternoon. The extra days equipment hire is included in the cost of your programme.
What will I need?
The PADI Open Water Diver certification or equivalent is the prerequisite for the PADI Drysuit Diver Specialty.
All standard scuba equipment requirements are included in the price. It is recommended that you purchase your own reel and surface marker buoy (SMB) for this programme, however we do have some school sets available for you to use.
You will need to fill out a self certification medical statement. If you have any medical conditions you think may prevent you from scuba diving please feel free to contact us and we will try to be of assistance.

Where can I go from here?
Once you have completed your PADI Drift Diver Specialty you can dive take full advantage of the fantastic drift dives on our UK coastal trips. As most drift dives take place from a boat, maybe the PADI Boat Diver Specialty should be on your to do list.
Once you have completed five PADI specialties and your PADI Rescue Diver and have 50 logged dives you hold all the prerequisites for the PADI Master Scuba Diver certification. This is the highest non-professional rating in the PADI system of diver education.
Here at Aquasport all of our Instructors hold this level of recreational certification. We recommend that every diver takes this route regardless of their further ambitions as we see it as a commitment to education and a real achievement.
