Diving might not always see you at your most glamorous, what with wet hair stuck to your face and mascara running down your cheeks – and that’s just the blokes – so it’s time to get the glad-rags on for the Aquasport Christmas Party and celebrate 2012.
And what a great year it’s been. Some of you have been introduced to diving, others have explored new destinations and more have discovered new things to do underwater with a growing bunch of friends. Now that’s worth drinking to!
As always, the Christmas Party promises to be another great night of festive food, booze and entertainment. You’ll meet up with your old diving buddies, make new friends who share your passion for diving, enjoy a little festive tipple and discover that while you instructors may be at ease in the pool it’s a different story on the dancefloor.

Sharks. We love ’em. That’s certainly the feeling we got from Aquasport club members who attended the two AWARE Shark Conservation presentations held at the centre.
We discovered that sharks are crucial to marine ecosystems. They maintain a balance in populations of prey species and keep the ocean healthy by removing ill or diseased animals. And we want to go and dive with them.
We also learned the shocking statistics of the unseen shark slaughter going on around the globe. Millions are snatched from the oceans each year to feed different industries, whether it’s for their fins for tasteless soup, their liver oil for cosmetics or their jaws for some gruesome trinket.
It would have been easy for you to walk away from the presentations feeling nothing but doom and gloom. But, typical of Aquasport divers you resolved to step up to become a champion of shark protection and take action to help them. The future of sharks hinges on holding shark fishing and trade to sustainable levels.
Read on to find out how you can help and check out a heart-breaking campaign video.
Divemaster … Scuba Diving Instructor … The very names have a great ring to them and now you can find out how to become a professional diver with the Go Pro night at Aquasport this November.
I bet we can all remember the instructors and divemasters who took us on our first tentative steps with scuba diving. They gave us the confidence and inspiration to literally ‘dive in’ to the sport.
Now, can you do the same? Have you got what it takes to become a PADI Pro? To find out, come along to Aquasport and join us as we host another of our popular PADI Go Pro events on Tuesday November 13th.
It’s an opportunity not to be missed, whether you are a newly trained diver or an experienced and seasoned veteran looking to climb the educational ladder to the giddy heights of PADI Divemaster and above.
Starting at Aquasport at 7pm there will be a series of short talks on a number of topics giving you a full overview of what it takes to become a PADI Professional. Our staff, including some of those who have certified as Divemasters this year, will be on hand to discuss how they developed as a diver by signing up to Go Pro with Aquasport.
The night is open to all divers regardless of qualification and agency, all you need is an interest in your own progression in diving.
We will also have a few special offers on the night for anyone looking to book on and make the commitment to Go Pro over the coming months.
As always the evening will be held at the best PADI facility in the Midlands – Aquasport’s purpose built National Geographic Scuba Centre based in Olton, Solihull.
To book your spot, pop into the centre or call us on 0121 706 6628.
The clocks have gone back and the dark nights are well and truly here – but you don’t have to let the sun set on your diving just yet. That’s because Aquasport can light the way with a catalogue of new night diving torches.
The latest to hit the shelves in the past few weeks is a range of torches from Intova. Promising a flashlight for every need, the Hawaii-based company offers everything from a low cost compact to a high-powered mega torch.
With compact ergonomic designs and rugged construction, the torches utilise modern LED technology which means there are no costly bulbs to break and replace. And with 100,000 hours of operational time, these LEDS are good for a lifetime!
The new range perfectly complements the sought-after Hollis torches that are proving such a hit with Aquasport divers and staff alike. And with the new range of Hollis technical canister torches coming soon it promises to be a very, very bright night diving season. → Read more
‘Australia shark attacks spark kill orders’…’Migratory sharks inch closer to extinction’…’Deepsea shark liver oil the new marine gold for pirates’ scream the headlines.
It seems that every week someone, somewhere finds a new reason to slaughter the ocean’s top predators and push them ever closer to extinction.
Club Aquasport intends to harness the combined strength of its members to campaign for the protection of sharks with the final part of the Project AWARE Shark Conservation Diver Specialty on Tuesday 30th of October, starting at 7pm.
Since we held the first Shark Awareness Night, the number of sharks slaughtered by fisherman had doubled to more than 57,832,000 and counting. That is why it is important for all of us to join forces to campaign for their protection.
And the theme of the evening is on how you can take action to give sharks a fighting chance of survival.
YOU know the picture, you’ve got back from a weekend of diving, amazed your work colleagues with tales of your underwater exploits and one or two of them say: “I’d love to try that.”
Well, now you can give them a chance to see for themselves what gets you excited with Aquasport International’s Discover Scuba Diving group sessions.
Just bring them down to our training pool and let our dedicated dive team do the rest by introducing them to the wonders of the weightless underwater world in a safe environment.
As try dives go, it has to be the ultimate experience. And here at Aquasport, we are offering you chance to try one of our rebreathers on for size as we host the second Hollis open night next Thursday, 11th October, from 3pm to 9pm.
The latest range of tec diving gear, including wings, twinsets, sidemounts, stage cylinders and deco bottles, will be on show and you will get the chance to dive with it yourself in our heated training pool.
But if you want to see what it is like diving ‘bubble free’ in one of our Inspiration closed circuit rebreathers or ‘almost bubble free’ with one of our Draeger semi-closed rebreathers then you best get a move on because we only have seven spots left.
The sessions will last for about 30 minutes. As expected, they are proving popular so you will need to call the centre and book one if you don’t want to miss out.
Outside of the Dive Show, we can’t think of anywhere else you that will offer you this opportunity. Unfortunately, due to time constraints only paid up club members can book for these.
WITH our spectacular summer season of diving ending in the Farnes next month, the Aquasport Club is now gearing up a winter schedule that is sure to scratch your scuba itch.
The plans include a presentation from one of the industry’s leading medical specialists whose studies into thermal stress and fitness will certainly focus the minds of those diving throughout the winter.
If you want to dive back into history and try your hand with the kind of equipment your great, great granddad used then the hard hat dive is one not to be missed.
If that is not enough for you there is the Christmas party, Shark night and another Hollis Gear try dive night. And there will be chance to try your hand at being a rebreather diver in our training pool.
So you think you know Dosthill? Well, think again because Aquasport instructors are ready to show you the dive site in a whole new light with the Night Diver Specialty.
The summer – if that’s what we can call it – may now be behind us and the darker nights are closing in, but that’s no reason to mothball your dive kit for the year just yet.
Starting next month, Aquasport International will be launching its dedicated Night Diver training programme – and it promises to brighten up your diving at Dosthill.
