PADI Tec 40 Diver
As with all the applications that you can get on your phones and computers these days, we’ve nicknamed Tec 40 as Tec Lite. It’s technical diving, but not the full monty…
We can supply all the equipment requirements for your training too, including large capacity cylinders, twin sets, extra stage cylinders and computers as part of the cost, so it’s also ‘tec on a budget’.
So if you’re interested in technical diving but you haven’t got all your own gear, or you have not yet met the prerequisites for the PADI Tec 45 Diver or PADI Tec 50 Diver, you can start your technical training with the PADI Tec 40 Diver. It is the first subdivision of the full PADI Tec Deep Diver programme and consists of the first four dives. Because you also do one of these dives in confined water, it is possible to start the PADI Tec 40 Diver in the middle of the coldest winter months, ready to continue in open water when spring arrives.
How do I get started?
As with all of the technical diving education programmes at Aquasport you start with the training materials. A deposit of £100 is required to book your PADI Tec 40 Diver. We will provide you with the PADI Tec Deep Diver Crew Pack for you to study prior to the start of your training. The pack includes the PADI Tec Deep Diver manual, dive planning checklist and dive planning slate.
The optional Equipment Set-up and Key Skills DVD is a great tool to help you practice at home in between your tec diving training sessions. You’ll continue to use the Tec Deep Diver Crew Pack throughout your technical training.
If you are looking at progressing through the technical training levels it is a good idea to complete our Twin Set Specialty before booking onto your Tec 40 training. This will allow you to gain valuable practical experience using a full twin cylinder setup.
What will I do?
During your programme you will cover the following:
- Equipment requirements, standards and different configurations used in technical diving.
- Use decompression software and dive computers to plan and make decompression dives with no more than 10 minutes of total decompression and not deeper than 40 metres.
- Use a single cylinder of decompression gas with up to 50% oxygen (EANx50) to add conservatism to the required decompression.
Since the PADI Tec 40 Diver is a subsection of the PADI Tec Deep Diver programme your training will credit you toward the PADI Tec 45 Diver and PADI Tec 50 Diver.
You use recreational scuba equipment, with some minor additions to enhance your ability to deal with tecnical diving conditions.
You will use the Tec Deep Diver manual, which introduces you to:
- tec diving jargon
- emergency procedures
- decompression and stage cylinder handling
- gas planning
You will participate in at least one confined water training dive and at least three open water training dives with your instructor, to a maximum depth of 40m.
How long will it take?
The PADI Tec 40 Diver takes place over a minimum of three days. The first day will concentrate on completing the theory sections from the PADI Tec Deep Diver manual.
You will also complete the first confined water training dive in our 3m deep on site training pool.
The remaining three open water training dives will be scheduled to be completed over one weekend.
What will I need?
The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification or equivalent, the PADI Deep Diver Specialty and the PADI Enriched Air Diver Specialty or equivalent are the prerequisites for the PADI Tec 40 Diver.
You will also need to have proof of at least 30 logged dives, of which at least 10 dives were made with enriched air and 7 deeper than 30m.
All standard and technical scuba equipment requirements, site entry fees, boat fees and air and enriched air fills are not included in the price of the PADI Tec 40 Diver.
The minimum age of enrollment on this programme is 18yrs.
You will need to fill out a self certification medical statement and also have it signed by a doctor prior to the start of your training. If you have any medical conditions you think may
prevent you from scuba diving please feel free to contact us and we will try to be of assistance.
PADI Tec 40 Diver £399.
You will need to have three full training days to complete the PADI Tec 40 Diver.
PADI Tec 40 Diver fee is based on three full days training. If you are unable to complete all the performance prerequisites required for certification, additional training days are charged at £130 a day.
A £100 deposit is required when you book your PADI Tec 40 Diver with Aquasport. Balance of payment is due two weeks prior to the start of your training.

Where can I go from here?
Once you have completed your PADI Tec 40 Diver then the obvious next step is onto the PADI Tec 45 Diver. If you do not yet have the required number of dives then discuss this with your instructor and see if these can be combined with the club diving schedule and arrange for a time to complete these.
For those of you with deeper and longer expectations the PSA Inspiration Closed Circuit Rebreather training programmes may be what you are looking for.
