PADI Diver Propulsion Vehicle Specialty
Diver Propulsion Vehicles, or DPVs for short, offer a thrilling way to see a lot more underwater in the brief amount of time we get to see it. They power you through the water without any effort from you. It’s a bit like a drift dive, without the drift. Want to visit that offshore reef from the beach? A DPV may be the way to go. So, whether making a shore dive or diving from a boat, a DPV is a great way to see more and have a great time doing it. We use Suex DPVs for the open water dives. These DPVs are highly rated as one of the best types available to recreational and technical divers worlswide.
Minimum age: 12 years
Course prerequisites: PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver
What will I do?
You will have two days of intense DPV training to complete. In our fully equipped multi-media classrooms, you will learn how to deal with many different scenarios, including how to maintain your DPV properly and techniques for diving with one safely. You will also practise the use of a DPV in our heated onsite training pool.
You will then put into practice what you learn in a combination of skills in two open water training dives with your PADI Instructor.
During your programme you will cover the following:
- Diver propulsion vehicle dive planning organisation, procedures, techniques, problems and hazards
- Equipment considerations
- DPV diving etiquette
- How to avoid harming fragile aquatic life
How do I get started?
Just pick your dates if you can and pay your £125 deposit and you will receive your PADI Diver Propulsion Vehicle Specialty eLearning login. Don’t worry if you can’t commit to a date straight away. There are plenty scheduled throughout the year and you can get started on the home study as soon as you have received your eLearning code.
How long will it take?
The PADI Diver Propulsion Vehicle Specialty takes place over one weekend. Starting on Saturday morning at 9am, you will review the theory sections from the PADI Diver Propulsion Vehicle programme and watch the PADI Diver Propulsion Vehicle DVD with your Instructor. You will then complete an orientation session in the pool so that you can practise using a DPV in confined water first. On the Sunday you will complete two open water training dives using Suex DPVs. Suex are a leading manufacturer in recreational, technical, commercial and military diving equipment. Suex DPVs are rated as one of the best DPVs on the market.
What will I need?
The PADI Diver Propulsion Vehicle Specialty is open to all divers over the age of 12 years who hold the PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver certification or equivalent.
You will need to fill out a self-certification medical statement. If you have any medical conditions that you think may prevent you from scuba diving, please feel free to contact us and we will try to be of assistance.
All the PADI materials and standard scuba equipment needed to complete the programme are included in the cost. You will need to pay for your entry to the open water dive site and any required air fills while away from the centre. This is approximately £30 a day.
Where can I go from here?
Once you have completed your PADI DPV Specialty you can hire a DPV for any future dives you wish to use them for. You will have more scope for travel and may want to extend your bottom time underwater. The PADI Enriched Air Diver Specialty or some technical dive training are definitely ones for you to consider combining with your DPV training to really open up the underwater world.
Once you have completed five PADI specialties, the PADI Rescue Diver course and have 50 logged dives you hold all the prerequisites for the PADI Master Scuba Diver certification. This is the highest non-professional rating in the PADI system of diver education.
