PADI Fish Identification Diver
Have you ever been scuba diving and asked yourself, “What was that?” Do your fish naming talents stretch as far as the Blue Spotted Ray, just because it looks like a ray with blue spots? The PADI Fish Identification Specialty provides you with the fish identification basics so that next time, you know the answers.
You will find you enjoy your dives even more when you recognise the creatures that you see. The fun part about this programme is you can use the skills you learn on every dive because once you learn the main fish families and characteristics it will help you decipher the species you see all over the world.
The PADI Fish Identification Specialty is taken in conjunction with our dive travel programme.
Minimum age: 10 years
Course prerequisites: PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver
What will I do?
You will have one and a half days of intense fish identification training to complete. With your PADI Instructor, you will then review the key ideas such as where to look and how to identify the fascinating fish that you can see underwater.
You will then put into practice what you learn in a combination of skills during two open water training dives.
During your programme you will cover the following:
- How to identify characteristics of local and not so local fish families and species
- Fish survey techniques and strategies
- Dive planning, organisation and procedures for dives with fish identification as the primary aim
How do I get started?
This PADI Specialty is run in conjunction with some of our diving trips and holidays, so you need to be booked onto one of these first, then pay your £95 deposit. There are no manuals, so you don’t have to worry about any home study before this course.
How long will it take?
The PADI Fish Identification Specialty takes place over one and a half days. Starting on an evening, you will review the theory sections from the PADI Fish Identification programme with your instructor. The next day will cover all the practical sessions during two open water training dives.
What will I need?
The PADI Fish Identification Specialty is open to all divers who hold the PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver certification or equivalent.
Standard scuba equipment may not necessarily be included in the cost of this programme as it is held in conjunction with dive travel. Please contact the centre for clarification. You will need to have your own diving slate and pencil, which can be purchased from our shop before your course.
You will also need to fill out a self-certification medical statement. If you have any medical conditions that you think may prevent you from scuba diving, please feel free to contact us and we will try to be of assistance.

Where can I go from here?
Once you have completed your PADI Fish Identification Specialty you will be starting to appreciate the fantastic aquatic life found around the world. An ideal progression to your training is the PADI Underwater Naturalist or PADI Digital Underwater Photographer, which will allow you to identify and document your finds.
Once you have completed five PADI specialties, the PADI Rescue Diver course and have 50 logged dives you hold all the prerequisites for the PADI Master Scuba Diver certification. This is the highest non-professional rating in the PADI system of diver education.
Here at Aquasport all our Instructors hold this level of recreational certification. We recommend that every diver takes this route regardless of their further ambitions as we see it as a commitment to education and a real achievement.
