Neutral buoyancy is a diver's most important skill, yet it is the one most likely to be overlooked. Divers like to be neutrally buoyant, but it can be a tricky thing to achieve. Divers who have mastered the highest performance levels in buoyancy stand apart. You have seen them underwater: the Instructors and Divemasters during your training gliding effortlessly, using less air and ascending, descending or just hovering, almost as if they are not even thinking about it. They interact gently with aquatic life and have a minimal effect on their surroundings.

The PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty, or PPB for short, refines the basic skills you learned during your initial training and elevates them to the next level.

Minimum age: 10

Course prerequisites: PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver

What will I do?

You will have two days of intense buoyancy training to complete. In our fully equipped multi-media classrooms, you will learn about proper weighting techniques and also how to streamline yourself and your equipment for diving.  You will then complete a buoyancy clinic with your PADI Instructor in our onsite heated training pool.

On the second day, you will then put into practice what you learn in a combination of skills during two open water training dives at a local dive site.

During your programme you will cover the following:

  • How to trim your equipment and weighting so you’re perfectly balanced in the water
  • Practise determining weighting so you’re not too light nor too heavy by even a slight degree
  • How to streamline to save air and move smoothly through the water
  • How to hover effortlessly in both a vertical and a horizontal position

How do I get started?

Just pick your dates if you can and pay your course fees and you will receive your PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy eLearning login details. Don’t worry if you can’t commit to a date straight away. There are plenty scheduled throughout the year and you can get started on the home study as soon as you have received your eLearning code.

How long will it take?

The PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty takes place over one weekend. Most courses start on the Saturday morning at 9 am, when you will review the theory sections from the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy manual and complete a buoyancy clinic with your Instructor in the pool during the afternoon. The Sunday will involve two open water training dives.

A few courses are available on a Friday and Saturday, starting at 6.30pm on the Friday evening to review the theory and complete your buoyancy clinic in our onsite pool. The Saurday is then spent at a local dive site to complete the two open water training dives.

What will I need?

The PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty is open to all divers who hold the PADI Open Water Diver certification or equivalent. As you will be completing two open water dives in a drysuit, some experience of diving in a drysuit is necessary. If you have never dived in a drysuit, then we strongly recommend that you do the PADI Dry Suit Diver Specialty first.

Once you have booked onto your PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty you will receive your PADI PPB eLearning materials to start you on your way. All the equipment you need to complete the programme is included. It is always a good move to buy your own dive computer for future dives, however we will supply one for the Sunday if you prefer.

You will need to fill out a self-certification medical statement. If you have any medical conditions that you think may prevent you from scuba diving, please feel free to contact us and we will try to be of assistance.

All the PADI materials and standard scuba equipment needed to complete the programme are included in the cost. You will need to pay for your entry to the open water dive site and any required air fills while away from the centre. This is approximately £30 a day.

Where can I go from here?

Once you have completed your PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty you will be able to really show off your buoyancy skills. Peak Performance Buoyancy is a must if your next step is the PADI Deep Diver, PADI Wreck Diver or the PADI Search and Recovery Diver Specialties.

Once you have completed five PADI specialties, the PADI Rescue Diver course and have 50 logged dives you hold all the prerequisites for the PADI Master Scuba Diver certification. This is the highest non-professional rating in the PADI system of diver education.

Here at Aquasport all our Instructors hold this level of recreational certification. We recommend that every diver takes this route regardless of their further ambitions as we see it as a commitment to education and a real achievement.
